Hand work

Some of what I do is repetitive hand, tool, and wood motions, prepping parts and joints. Sharp tools on this oak is quite nice. It has high strength to weight and lets me use slightly thinner pieces, slim the lines a little, wait for the finish to darken out the patterns. No wonder white oak is Gil's favorite species.

Cabinets and face frames

My cabinet boxes are a true 3/4 birch ply wood with a tongue and groove assembly system. I'm adding face frames and will make all the drawer fronts and doors inset to them. This is a more traditional way of adding strength and square to the boxes and adds a design element. This also makes the fit and trim of the doors and fronts more precise and almost necessitates hand planes and careful eyes, something the small shop can offer. A slower pace than mass produced, a more careful eye, a better grain balance, a more enjoyable work day. Nice work!

Bed sanding- these guys measure in the 1000ths, I don't see that marking on my tape measure......

Sorting and matching

Parts of the whole. Looking to their final placement, I'm sorting wood parts for grain and color and organizing for balance and coolness, cant forget that part.

Good wood

There is a physical part of woodworking thats just grunt work like unloading wood. Get the gloves on, hand 'em over, line up some saw horses, move the car. In the rithym of work I get to lift and move each board so I feel the weight and density of the wood, little variations in each species, each tree. I can find boards from the same tree, I can sort for straight grain good frame wood, I can look for wavy grain for panels and so on. Good wood for the project, it all starts here.

Kitchen cabinets

I'm working on a kitchen project made of white oak lumber. The layout is a "U" shape with two opposing walls of cabinet and counter. There is an island butcher block piece.

Something fishy goin' on

These are band saw cut sculpture with carved watery wood bases, they vary in size from 6" to 20", some are multiples and some are swimming up stream by themselves. These guys have a band saw texture that has been buffed and feels bumpy and smooth at the same time. This really shows the tool use and craftsman's work. Budhha cabinet

This cabinet is a traveling altar. Its made of cherry, has drawers inside for altar stuff , and has a very nice frame and panel detail on the doors, sort of a flower corner if you will. The pulls and handles are carved and feel really nice.
