Desk is completed

Thar she blows! A completed desk of curly maple frames and curly cherry panels.

This piece has taken some time to get through my shop, in part due to some health issues I have but also because the nature of this piece has dictated careful work at slow intervals. When I look at the piece I see lots of subtle Phil details, the most obvious is the leg design. Its got a 45 degree angle that puts it at the corner and makes the sculptural shape add a strength to the over all piece, a taper, a switch of a shape top to bottom, its got more there that a quick glance can see yet the quick glance does see a balance and strength. The cherry is so dynamic its only going to get richer and darker and more beautiful in the years to come.. The drawers have quarter sawn sycamore interiors which is a taditional lumber to use for stability and beauty.
Time to write a letter! Cheers!

Ready for oil

Here is the desk complete with drawers and pulls, all she needs now is oil finish.

The curly cherry drawer fronts and curly maple legs and frames will make a dynamo combo- I cant wait to put on oil, it brings out the grain and curl.

Dovetails

Dovetails are a pleasure to cut

Fitting the drawers and selecting the size pull I am going to make, I keep some old samples around so I can see the subtle size requirements for this and other pieces- I'll make a custom shape for this desk.

Final parts

Working on final parts for the desk, I am using quarter sawn sycamore lumber for drawer parts, very stable lumber and it looks cool inside the drawers.
